Barnard's Galaxy (NGC 6822)

Irregular Galaxy // Sagittarius

Object Analysis

Barnard's Galaxy (NGC 6822) is a barred irregular galaxy approximately 1.6 million light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. It is part of the Local Group of galaxies and is one of the closer galaxies to the Milky Way.

Discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884, it is similar in structure and composition to the Small Magellanic Cloud. It contains several large H II regions (nebulae) where active star formation is occurring, identified as bright red knots in photographs.

NGC 6822 is chemically primitive, with low metallicity. This makes it an excellent proxy for studying the conditions of the early universe. Its irregular shape is typical of dwarf galaxies that lack the mass to form a coherent spiral structure.
