Box Nebula (NGC 6309)

Planetary Nebula // Ophiuchus

Object Analysis

The Box Nebula (NGC 6309) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Ophiuchus. It gets its name from its unusual, rectangular, or "box-like" appearance in many telescopes. It is located approximately 6,500 light-years away from Earth.

The central star is a hot white dwarf that is shedding its outer layers. The "box" shape is likely caused by the interaction of multiple winds from the star being funneled through a dense disk of dust around the star's equator. It is actually a bipolar nebula, but our specific viewing angle gives it the appearance of a rectangular structure with "corners."

Detailed images show that the nebula has a bright, inner quadrupolar structure and a fainter outer halo. The complex symmetry of the Box Nebula suggests that the central star may be part of a binary system, where the gravity of a companion star has helped to "sculpt" the expanding gas into its distinctive geometric shape.
