Centaurus A (NGC 5128)

Lenticular Galaxy // Centaurus

Object Analysis

Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is a peculiar galaxy in the constellation of Centaurus. It is one of the closest radio galaxies to Earth, so its active galactic nucleus has been extensively studied. The galaxy is also the fifth-brightest in the sky, making it an ideal target for amateur astronomy, though it is only visible from low northern latitudes and the southern hemisphere.

Morphologically, it appears to be a giant elliptical galaxy bisected by a prominent, chaotic dust lane. This strange structure is believed to be the result of a merger between a massive elliptical galaxy and a smaller spiral galaxy. The collision has sparked intense bursts of star formation within the dust disk.

At its center lies a supermassive black hole with a mass of 55 million solar masses, which ejects relativistic jets of plasma that are responsible for emissions in the X-ray and radio wavelengths. These jets extend over a million light-years into intergalactic space.
