Ganymede

Moon

Object Analysis

Ganymede is a satellite of Jupiter and the largest and most massive moon of the Solar System. It is the ninth-largest object in the Solar System, and is even larger than the planet Mercury, although only about half as massive.

Ganymede is unique in that it is the only moon known to have a substantial magnetosphere, likely created by convection within its liquid iron core. This magnetic field creates a small cocoon of protection against Jupiter's fierce radiation belts and even generates auroras on the moon's tenuous atmosphere.

The surface is a mix of two types of terrain: very old, highly cratered dark regions and younger (though still ancient), lighter regions marked with an extensive array of grooves and ridges. These grooves are evidence of past tectonic activity, likely driven by tidal heating from Jupiter.
