Object Analysis
The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius. It is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae, at a distance of about 650 light-years. It is similar in appearance to the Ring Nebula and the Dumbbell Nebula, but appears larger due to its proximity.
Often referred to as the "Eye of God" or the "Eye of Sauron" in pop culture, the Helix appears as a giant eye looking back at us. The central star is a white dwarf destined to slowly cool over billions of years. The outer rings are composed of gas expelled roughly 10,000 years ago.
The nebula has a complex structure of "cometary knots"—clumps of nebulosity with glowing tails that point away from the central star. These knots are likely shielding dust and gas behind them from the intense radiation of the white dwarf.
