Hercules A

Elliptical Galaxy // Hercules

Object Analysis

Hercules A is a massive elliptical galaxy and one of the most powerful radio sources in the sky. It is located about 2 billion light-years away in the constellation Hercules. While it looks like a normal, "boring" elliptical galaxy in visible light, radio telescopes reveal a much more violent reality.

The galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole that is 2.5 billion times the mass of our Sun. This black hole ejections two colossal jets of plasma that extend for over 1.5 million light-years into intergalactic space. These jets are the largest of their kind, easily dwarfing the host galaxy itself.

The jets are composed of high-energy particles moving at nearly the speed of light. As they blast out of the galaxy, they create giant bubbles of radio-emitting gas. These jets are not smooth; they contain rings and knots, suggesting that the black hole erupts in pulses, like a cosmic heart beating over millions of years.
