Object Analysis
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two-and-a-half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined. It is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium.
Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. Its atmosphere is separated into different bands and zones that rotate in opposite directions, creating turbulence and storms. The most famous feature is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm that has existed for at least 300 years and is large enough to swallow the Earth whole.
The planet has a faint ring system and a powerful magnetosphere. It has 95 known moons (as of 2023), including the four large Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Jupiter plays a protective role in the solar system, as its massive gravity well captures or deflects comets that might otherwise threaten the inner planets.
