Messier 109

Barred Spiral // Ursa Major

Object Analysis

Messier 109 (M109) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major, located just south-east of the star Phecda in the Big Dipper. It is roughly 83 million light-years away. It is the most distant object in the Messier catalog and serves as the prototype for "barred" spiral galaxies.

The galaxy features a prominent central bar from which the spiral arms emerge. These arms are quite long and well-defined, wrapping gracefully around the core. M109 has three satellite galaxies of its own (UGC 6923, UGC 6940, and UGC 6969), which appear as faint patches in deep imagery.

M109 is incredibly rich in neutral hydrogen gas. However, despite this fuel, it has a relatively low rate of star formation compared to other spiral galaxies. It is a massive galaxy, containing roughly a trillion stars, and offers a beautiful face-on view of the complex dynamics of barred galactic structures.
