Messier 61

Spiral Galaxy // Virgo

Object Analysis

Messier 61 (M61) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo. It is one of the largest members of the Virgo Cluster, roughly 100,000 light-years in diameter. M61 is classified as a starburst galaxy, meaning it is currently undergoing an extremely high rate of star formation.

The galaxy is particularly famous among astronomers as a "supernova factory." Since 1926, eight supernovae have been observed in M61, which is one of the highest counts for any galaxy in the Messier catalog. This high rate is a direct result of the intense star birth; more stars being born means more massive stars reaching the end of their lives and exploding.

At the center of M61 lies a supermassive black hole with a mass of about 5 million Suns. The galaxy also features a "nuclear star cluster"—a dense knot of stars at the very center that is even more packed than a globular cluster. Its face-on orientation makes it a perfect laboratory for studying the structure of barred spirals and the triggers of galactic-scale star formation.
