Object Analysis
Messier 67 (M67) is an open cluster in the constellation Cancer. It is one of the oldest known open clusters, with an estimated age of 3.2 to 5 billion years. Most open clusters disperse after a few hundred million years, making M67 a rare survivor.
Located 2,700 light-years away, M67 contains about 500 stars. It is unique because its stars are roughly the same age and chemical composition as our Sun. This makes M67 a perfect laboratory for studying solar-type stars in a controlled environment.
Because it is so old, M67 has undergone significant mass segregation. The heavier stars have sunk to the center, while the lighter stars have migrated to the outskirts or been stripped away entirely. It contains over 100 Sun-like stars and many red giants.
