Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977)

Reflection Nebula // Orion

Object Analysis

The Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977) is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Orion, located just north of the Great Orion Nebula (M42). It is part of the same massive molecular cloud complex. Its name comes from the dark shape in the center that resembles a person running through a cloud of blue light.

Unlike the Orion Nebula, which is an emission nebula glowing red from ionized gas, the Running Man is primarily a reflection nebula. It glows blue because it is reflecting the light from three bright stars (42 Orionis and others) off the surrounding dust clouds.

The "running man" himself is actually a silhouette—a dark lane of opaque dust in the foreground that happens to be shaped like a human figure. It is a popular target for astrophotographers because its bright blue color provides a stunning contrast to the deep reds of the nearby Orion and De Mairan’s nebulae.
