Southern Pinwheel (M83)

Barred Spiral // Hydra

Object Analysis

The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (Messier 83) is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 15 million light-years away in the constellation Hydra. It is one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies in the sky, making it visible with binoculars.

M83 is nicknamed the Southern Pinwheel due to its resemblance to M101 (The Pinwheel Galaxy). It has well-defined spiral arms rich in pink hydrogen gas (H II regions) and blue clusters of young stars, indicating active star formation.

This galaxy is a prolific supernova producer; six supernovae have been observed in M83 over the last century. This high rate suggests an incredibly active and massive population of stars that evolve quickly and end their lives in violent explosions.
