Statue of Liberty Nebula (NGC 3576)

Emission Nebula // Carina

Object Analysis

The Statue of Liberty Nebula (NGC 3576) is a bright emission nebula in the Sagittarius arm of the galaxy, located about 9,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. The name comes from the nebula's distinctive shape in the center, which resembles the head and torch-bearing arm of the Statue of Liberty.

This nebula is a site of intense star formation. Complex loops and filaments of gas have been shaped by the powerful winds from massive stars embedded within the cloud. Dark, obscuring dust lanes are scattered throughout the region, adding to the dramatic contrast.

NGC 3576 is often imaged in narrowband filters (Hubble palette) which reveal the intricate structure of the ionized gases—sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen. It is structurally complex and offers a glimpse into the chaotic environment of a stellar nursery.
