Object Analysis
VY Canis Majoris is a red hypergiant star in the constellation Canis Major. It is located about 3,900 light-years from Earth. For many years, it was considered the largest known star, though recent measurements have placed it slightly behind UY Scuti and others in terms of radius.
The star is extremely luminous and is shrouded in a complex, asymmetrical nebula of its own making. This nebula is composed of vast quantities of gas and dust ejected by the star during violent eruptions. These ejections are so massive that they have stripped the star of half its initial mass over its short lifetime.
VY Canis Majoris is an exceptionally active and unstable star. Its surface is likely dominated by massive convection cells, similar to those on the Sun but millions of miles wide. It is a prime candidate for a "supernova" or even a "direct-to-black-hole" collapse in the near astronomical future.
