Object Analysis
The Wizard Nebula (NGC 7380) is an open cluster discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. The nebula surrounding the cluster is formally known as SH2-142. It is located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 7,200 light-years from the Solar System.
This emission nebula spans about 100 light-years. Visually, the interplay of gas, dust, and stars creates a shape that resembles a medieval sorcerer in a pointed hat, complete with outstretched arms casting a spell. The nebula is ionized by the binary star DH Cephei.
It is an active star-forming region. Recent studies have shown that the stars formed here are very young, roughly 4 million years old, and the nebula is rich in "polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons"—complex organic molecules that are the building blocks of life.
